Chapter 14

The next two days passed quickly. The first was a day reserved for Ranger L. The Isle as a whole shut down for the funeral, and the turnout for islanders to pay respects to Landon was overwhelming. Not a soul missed it—except for the notoriously absent person who should have been seated in the front row with the family.

Melissa was deep within the confines of The Isle’s prison. Probably on a similar level of maximum security as my father. Short of trying to wipe out an entire population of people, a la my father, Melissa had committed one of the worst offenses in the islanders’ eyes, and she’d pay dearly for it.

The day after the funeral, I woke with Ranger X beside me in bed for the first time in several days. With the case mostly wrapped up, X had finally taken a full night off work after nearly ‘round the clock duty since the murder.

Following a leisurely morning relaxing in bed, we finally pulled ourselves free of the tangled sheets and made our way downstairs. As I brewed coffee, I cast a glance over my shoulder at X. “I don’t mean to bring up the case already,” I said carefully, “but what are the chances I could get in for a visit to prison? I just want to talk to Melissa.”

Ranger X looked handsome in a quarter zip gray sweater, soft as butter, as he sat at the table in the middle of the storeroom staring at a plate of food. “I don’t know. I can’t get you in there myself—there’s a ban on visitors to her cell, and I can’t afford to risk people thinking I’m showing you favoritism on this one. We have to do everything by the book. Maybe once the trial is complete.”

“I figured you’d say that,” I said. “I just... I want to understand. Maybe if I could talk to her...”

“We’re all thinking that.” Ranger X’s jaw went tight. “We all wonder why, but the truth is, she’s not talking. I’m sorry, I don’t see that changing for anyone—even you. She killed the man she claimed to love. I am not sure there is any explanation that would make this better.”

“Maybe that’s true.” I pulled the coffee cups off the table and set one in front of X. “At least it’s over now, and Landon’s family can have closure. Not that it helps all that much in easing the pain they must be feeling.”

Ranger X leaned toward me and pressed a kiss to the edge of my mouth. “Try not to worry.”

“I’m not worried,” I said. “I just wish I understood. There are still some things that don’t quite make sense. The letter with Liam’s name on it... Ranger L’s visits into The Forest and weekends away. I don’t know how that’s explained by Melissa’s arrest.”

Ranger X raised his shoulders and lowered them. “We’ve got our work cut out for us in piecing together the details to the case. With any luck, Melissa will try to strike a deal and start talking.
